The Bee Research Institute(BRI), Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) is the only one national comprehensive research institute on apicultural science which conducts applied basic research and explores the application of new and high technology in apicultural science with the aim to improve the economic and social effectiveness of apiculture and promote the modernization of apiculture science and technology. It was founded in 1958 with the support of chairman Zhu De and some other leaders, and situated in Beijing Botanical Garden near the Fragrant Hill (Xiang Shan) in the west suburb of Beijing with beautiful scenery and abundant nectar plants.

BRI has 7 laboratories with as Bee resources and genetic breeding, Bee protection and biosafety, Beekeeping and biotechnology, Insect pollination and ecology, Bee products, Bee product quality safety research and evaluation Apiculture economy management and information, as well as the periodical office of the national magazine Apiculture of China. MOA Bee Product Quality Supervision, Inspection and Testing Center (Beijing) and Apicultural Science Association of China are affiliated to IAR.

Apiculture involves animal and veterinary discipline cluster and quality and processing discipline cluster. There are 4 discipline fields, including insect pollination and ecology, pollinator biology, bee product processing and bee product quality safety; and 6 research directions, including insect pollination technology and ecological evaluation, pollinator resource and breeding, pollinator raising and biotechnology, pollinator disease and pests prevention and control, bee product processing and bee product quality and safety.

BRI has 7 scientific technology platforms, which are MOA key laboratory for pollinator biology, CAAS key open laboratory for pollinator biology, MOA Bee Product Quality Supervision, Inspection and Testing Center (Beijing), MOA Risk Evaluation Laboratory for Bee Product Quality Safety (Beijing), National Apiculture Technology R&D Center, bee product sub-center of National Agriculture Processing Technology R&D Center and National Bee Germplasm Resource Conservation Center.

BRI has gained 97 scientific research achievements, among which, there are 70 award-winning achievements (5 national awards and 31 provincial and ministerial awards); 57 patents (36 patents for invention). With the in-depth development of scientific research, BRI will play an active role in the ecological environment engineering research.
