Shanghai Veterinary Research Institute (SHVRI), formerly Shanghai Institute of Domestic Animal Parasitology, is a national research institute that specializes in researches on major swine and avian infectious diseases, animal parasitic diseases, zoonosis and anti-parasite drug, with special focus on etiological biology, molecular epidemiology, pathogenesis and immunologic mechanism of pathogens as well as applied research on diagnosis, prevention and control technologies of animal diseases. It is also oriented to the research and development of new type of safe and efficient animal vaccines, therapeutic drugs, new preparations, as well as fast and convenient diagnosis technologies of epidemic diseases and the new preparations, thus technically promoting the development of husbandry and human health. SHVRI also serves as a branch of the China Animal Health and Epidemiology Center. Several laboratories in the Institute were named as leading laboratories by different authorities, such as National Laboratory of Animal Shistosomiasis Prevention and Control, Key Laboratory of Animal Parasitology of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal-borne Food Safety Research Center of CAAS, and Key Open Laboratory of Veterinary Drugs Safety Evaluation and Residue Research of CAAS. SHVRI hosts an academic journal Chinese Journal of Animal Infectious Diseases.
Located at Zizhu Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone in Shanghai, SHVRI covers an area of 60 mu, including a scientific experiment building of 14000 m2, Two animal facilities for pigs, chicken and small animals, and a BSL-3 facility of 4000 m2 is under construction. The Institute has been well equipped with a number of high-ranked equipments or instruments, such as ultra-centrifuge, 3D tomographic electron microscope, confocal microscope, Real-time PCR machine, HPLC triple quadrupole mass spectrometer, ultra performance liquid chromatography quadruplle mass spectrometer, gas chromatography quadrupole mass spectrometer, et al.
SHVRI is comprised of six departments of Animal Schistosomiasiss, Animal Parasitology, Animal Pharmacology, Swine Infectious Diseases, Avian Infectious Diseases, Veterinary Public Health, and Animal-borne Food Safety Research Center. Under these there are 20 research groups leading by 20 principal investigators (PI). Now there are 120 faculty and staffs including 45 senior researchers. SHVRI also runs master programs, PH.D programs and postdoctoral stations. The number of registered postdoctoral researchers, candidate doctors and masters totals 185.
In recent years, SHVRI has undertaken more than 300 research projects of National Program on Key Basic Research Project (973 Program), National High-tech R&D Program of China (863 Program), and National Natural Science Foundation of China(Key Program), etc., with research funds totaling 260 million yuan. Since its establishment, SHVRI has been awarded over 60 scientific research achievements, including the second prize and the third prize of National Scientific and Technological Progress Award, the first prize of Scientific and Technological Progress Award of the Ministry of Agriculture. 11 products and techniques (vaccines, drugs and diagnosis products or techniques) developed by the Institute have been approved by MOA as new veterinary drugs, and 38 patent certificates were obtained. In the past 5 years, over 1,000 research papers has been published, of which over 300 were published in international journals.
SHVRI today is pursuing a strategic aim of developing within five years into a first-class research institute in China playing a consolidated and dominant role in Chinese veterinary community, and is trying to achieve the great aim of developing in another five years into a first-class institute in the world. SHVRI will obtain some directive, dominant and marked scientific achievements in basic research, making major technological breakthrough, and vaccine preparation to meet the increasing needs of husbandry development, and to build a lead in the technologic development of animal medicine science. SHVRI will become a national center with internationally advanced level for technological innovation in animal medicine, an incubator centre for animal medicine business, an international center for animal medicine exchange, and a foster base for animal medicine high-tech talents.
MAJOR RESEARCHES 1. On the Prevention and Control of Swine Infectious Diseases
In this field, the main research subjects are major swine viral and bacterial infectious diseases. Researches on pathogenic mechanism and prevention and control technology are carried out by adopting technologies in molecular biology, cell biology, molecular immunology, molecular virology, and molecular bacteriology at different levels and gradations of groups, individuals, cells, molecules, and genes. The main research orientations include:
• Molecular epidemiological investigation of major swine infectious diseases;
• Development of DNA vaccines and viral vectors engineering vaccines for major swine infectious diseases;
• Researches on immunity and pathogenic mechanism of major swine viruses;
• Technological platform for researches on the identification and diagnosis of swine infectious diseases and emerging infectious diseases.
This research team, led by Dr. Zhiguang Tong, consists of 6 researchers with senior professional titles, 10 researchers with intermediate professional titles, 31 graduates. In recent years, the team has accomplished 36 national and provincial/ministerial scientific projects, and has been awarded 5 national and provincial/ministerial scientific achievements. 278 academic papers have been published, 119 of which have been cited by SCI, and many research findings have been published in such international journals as Journal of Virology, Emerging Infectious Diseases, PLoS One, Virology and Vet Microbiol, etc..
2. On Waterfowl Infectious Diseases
In this field, the main research subjects are major poultry viral and bacterial infectious diseases, and researches on pathogenic mechanism and prevention and control technology are carried out by adopting technologies in molecular biology, cell biology, molecular immunology, etc. at different levels of living bodies, cells, and genes. The main research orientations include:
• Epidemiological investigations of major waterfowl infectious diseases and monitoring of emerging waterfowl infectious diseases;
• Researches on the prevention and control technology of major waterfowl infectious diseases and of major emerging waterfowl infectious
diseases;
• Researches on the pathogenic mechanism and the cross-species transmission mechanism of major avian infectious diseases;
• Researches on waterfowl innate immunity and novel vaccines.
This research team consists of 10 researchers with senior professional titles, 8 researches with intermediate professional titles, 52 graduates. In recent years, the team has undertaken over 30 national and provincial/ministerial scientific projects, and has applied for more than 30 patents. More than 100 academic papers have been published, over 40 of which have been cited by SCI, and many research findings have been published in such international journals as Journal of Virology, Emerging Infectious Diseases, Virology and Vet Microbiol, etc.
3. On Animal Parasitology
The research on the prevention and control of animal parasitic diseases is a traditional discipline of SHVRI. The main research subjects include some major zoonotic parasitic diseases such as schistosomiasis, toxoplasmosis , cryptosporidiosis, etc. and include some damaging parasitic diseases of domestic animals and poultry such as chicken coccidiosis, and tick borne diseases, etc. Basic and applied researches are carried out concerning pathogenic biology, functional genomics, proteomics, invasion and pathogenic mechanism, immunology, epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, vaccines, prevention and control, etc. The main research orientations include:
• Epidemiology and comprehensive prevention and control;
• Researches on diagnosis, treatment, vaccines and relevant preparations and products;
• Functional genomics and proteomics;
• Parasitic infection immunology and pathogenic mechanism;
• Researches on the function and action mechanism of major parasite molecules.
This research team consists of 8 Researchers, 10 Associate Researches, 10 researches with intermediate professional titles, and over 40 registered postdoctors, doctor candidates and master candidates. The Chief Scientist is Dr. Jiaojiao Lin. The team has undertaken over 60 national and provincial/ ministerial scientific projects, has been awarded more than 30 national and provincial/ ministerial scientific achievements, and has been granted over 30 national patents. Over 20 monographs have been published. More than 600 academic papers have been published, over 100 of which have been cited by SCI journals including Mol. Cell Protemics, J. Proteome Res., Protemics, Plos One, etc.
4. On animal pharmacology
This research focuses on the research and development of new veterinary drugs. The main research orientations include:
• Innovative researches on efficient new antibiosis, parasitic veterinary chemicals, biological drugs, and natural drugs;
• Researches on drug synthesis and sifting, pharmacodynamic evaluation, pharmacokinetics and drug bioequiavailability;
• Technology of veterinary drug residue detection and criterion establishment, and researches of fast detection technology;
• Researches on the new dosage forms and new drug delivery technology of veterinary drug use targeting preparation, long-acting
preparation, etc.;
• Researches on biological preparations, antimicrobial peptides and vaccine adjuvants;
• Researches on the effective antibiotic, antiviral and anti-parasitic components of natural drugs, and research and development of natural
drug immunopotentiators and feed additives.
This research team consists of 8 researchers with senior professional titles, 10 researches with intermediate professional titles, and over 35 doctor and master candidates, The Chief Scientist is Dr. Feiqun Xue. In recent five years, the team has undertaken 24 national scientific projects, and 3 new veterinary drugs have been approved by MOA. 208 academic papers have been published, 44 of which have been cited by SCI. This team has accomplished the research on a series of novel veterinary drug products: a national first class new veterinary drug Trybizine Hydrochloride; a national second class new veterinary drug Diclazuril (the Third Prize of National S&T Progress Award); a national second class new veterinary drug Nitazoxanide; a national third class new veterinary drug Tiefeng Anti-coccidiosis Powder.
INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION
In order to catch up with and surpass the international advanced level in the field of animal diseases prevention and control research, SHVRI has launched different kinds of international collaborations and academic exchange. Research funds have been obtained from World Health Organization, EU Framework Program and other channels. Scientific and technology cooperation has been established with University of London in UK, Kansas State University in USA, Japan National Research Center for Protozoan Diseases, and other foreign organizations and research institutes. SHVRI also has undertaken internationally research projects in collaboration with World Health Organization, United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization, and EU Framework Program, and has carried out academic communications with over 20 countries and regions such as Korea, France, and Russia. Having established friendly international research collaborations and an international collaboration network through the above-mentioned collaboration and exchange, SHVRI has gained greater popularity worldwide.
TRANSFORMATION OF RESEARCH FINDINGS
SHVRI attaches much importance to the development of scientific industries. Since the anticoccidial vaccine Diclazuril was put into production, great economic benefits have been reaped. Chicken Coccidiosis Trivalent Combined Live Vaccine ( DLV)is the first parasitic vaccine in China that has been granted certificates for new veterinary drugs. Significant progress has been made in the research and development of the following products:high pathogenic Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome marker vaccine,Avian Influenza cell vaccine,duck-origin Tembusu virus vaccine,Newcastle Disease live vaccine,Riemerella rnatipestifer vaccine,chicken coccidiosis quadrivalent attenuated vaccine,novel anti-coccidiosis Nitromezuril,20% Praziquantel injection. Besides, Swine Japanese Encephalitis virus live vaccine, Porcine Circovirus virus-like particles vaccine and classical Swine Fever synthetic peptide vaccine are in research and development.
NEXT MISSIONS
SHVRI will achieve the following goals in the next 5-10 years. Keeping an eye on with the development frontier and trend of the relevant fields and disciplines, SHVRI will carry out researches on forward-looking, crucial and basic technologies of prevention and control and also on basic theories, aiming at solving the technological problems that place restrictions on the prevention and control of animal diseases. Emphasis will be put on molecular epidemiological research on major animal diseases and animal-borne zoonosis; researches on the interaction between pathogen and the host, and the molecular pathogenic and immune mechanism, basic research on viruses, bacteria, parasitic infection and immunization, and also will be put on the research and development of new vaccines and new diagnostic technology and preparation, of new antibacterial, antiparasitic drugs, thus technically promoting the development of husbandry and human health. In 2020, SHVRI will develop into a first-class veterinary research institute in China with significant influence worldwide, a national center with internationally advanced level for technological innovation in animal medicine, an incubator centre for animal medicine business, an international exchange center for animal medicine technology, and a foster base for high-tech talents for animal medicine.
