The Lanzhou Veterinary Research Institute (LVRI) is one of the famous institutes engaging in research on preventive veterinary medicine in China. It is especially superior in research on epidemic diseases of herbivores. It has established Laboratory of Livestock Foot-and-Mouth Disease, Laboratory of Livestock Infectious Disease, Laboratory of Livestock Parasitic Disease, Laboratory of Zoonosis, and Laboratory of Poultry Diseases. Now it has a working staff of 292, including 17 experts enjoying special allowances of governments, 1 outstanding talent in the first-level post, 2 in the second-level post, 10 in the third-level post of CAAS, and 1 winner of the National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars of China, Distinguished Professor of Changjiang Scholars Program.

LIVR mainly conducts research on severe intense animal infectious diseases and parasitic disease. It also engages in basic, applied and development research on causes, diagnosis, immunity and prevention of animal diseases, with an aim to address problems in sustainable control of serious animal diseases in animal husbandry and ensure healthy development of animal husbandry. LIVR is the only research, diagnosis and consultancy centre for foot-and-mouth disease in China, enjoying good reputation at home and abroad. Besides, it has made great breakthroughs in research on pathogeny of animal diseases, epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and quarantine, immunity and prevention technology as well as personnel training, technology development, basic infrastructure and construction.

LIVR now has several scientific and technological innovation platforms: National Key Laboratory of Pathogenic Biology of Livestock Diseases, OIE/National Reference Laboratory of Foot-and-Mouth Disease, Comprehensive Laboratory of Pathogenic Biology of Animal Diseases of the Ministry of Agriculture, Gansu Key Laboratory of Animal Zoonosis, and Gansu Research Center for Bioinstrumentation Engineering Technology. The floor area of its Comprehensive Research Building, Parasite Research Building, and Foot - and - Mouth Disease Research Building is 15,000 m2. Besides, it has world-class instruments and equipment, such as electronic speculum, bioreactor, high performance liquid chromatography, ultracentrifuge, protein purification system and sequencer. It also has 1 P3-level laboratory for research on intense infectious diseases and animal sheds which meet SPF-level standards and other different standards. Now a laboratory that meets SPF-level standards is under construction.

Since its establishment, LIVR has undertaken over 700 scientific research projects and provided 352 scientific research achievements and won 127 awards, including 13 national awards. It has successfully developed 135 kinds of new products including 94 diagnose preparations, 34 vaccines and 7 veterinary drugs.

LIVR has been attaching importance to transformation of scientific research achievements. In 1995, it built the first and the most advanced pilot GMP plant of animal vaccines in China for pilot production of new products; in 2004, it built the largest and most advanced pilot plant of foot-and-mouth disease vaccines.
