Harbin Veterinary Research Institute (HVRI), CAAS was founded in 1948, the first research institute of veterinary medicine in China. It mainly engages in applied and basic research on prevention and control of animal infectious diseases. A lot of academic achievements have been made in etiology, epidemiology, pathogenic mechanism, pathology, diagnosis, immunology, molecular biology, veterinary biotechnology, and other areas. 254 research achievements have been obtained, which listed HIVR among the Top 100 research institutes in China. Meanwhile, HIVR has established cooperative relations with over 30 countries and regions and maintained long-term cooperative relations with some of those countries.

There are 566 staffs in HIVR, including 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), and 80 senior researchers. The Institute has been authorized to have 2 centers for postdoctoral studies, 2 subjects and conferring units for Ph.D. degree and 3 for master degree. There are 186 doctor and master candidates studying in the Institute.

Development and Application of Vaccines and Diagnostic Reagents

HIVR has developed more than 120 kinds of diagnostic reagents and vaccines for the prevention and control of animal infectious diseases. The ‘Avian influenza vaccines’, ‘Transmissible Gastroenteritis and Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Vaccine’,‘Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Vaccine’, ‘Pseudorabies Vaccine’, ‘Vaccine of recombinant fowlpox virus expressing infectious laryngotracheitis virus’, ‘Porcine Circovirus Type2 Vaccine’ and other products are leading the world. The Harbin Weike Biotechnology Development Company under HIVR has earned the reputation of “Top 10 Independent Innovation Company in China”.

The Four Great Achievements of the 20th Century in the Veterinary Field

Four vaccines developed by HIVR were selected by CAE as “The Four Great Achievements of the 20th Century in the Veterinary Field”, namely “EIAV and donkey leucocyte attenuated vaccine”, “hog cholera attenuated lapinized vaccine”, “rinderpest attenuated ovinized and caprined vaccine for cattle”, and “bovine pleuropneumonia attenuated lapinized vaccine”.
