Buffalo Research Institute (BRI)

Buffalo Research Institute (BRI) of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) is the only specialized research institute on buffalo in China. It was established by Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences in 1958, merged into the administration of local government in 1960 and reestablished in 1994, currently affiliated to both Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Fishery, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Bureau of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. It is located in northern suburb of Nanning, the capital of Guangxi, covering an area of 300 hectares.
The institute mainly undertakes scientific research on buffalo, pilot test of the scientific research findings, technical training, extension and development of technology, breeding and promoting of buffalo breed, etc.
The institute is the research and develop center and breeding center on buffalo in Guangxi, the nation's largest pure breed buffalo breeding base, owning the National Key Breeding Buffalo Farm, the Key Laboratory of Buffalo Genetics, Breeding and Reproduction Technology, Ministry of Agriculture, the Achievement Demonstration Base of Introducing Intelligence awarded by State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, China, National International cooperation in science and technology base and the Buffalo Researching and Developing Talent Highland of Guangxi etc.
Since establishment, the institute has researched in depth and made great achievements in artificial insemination (AI), crossbreeding improvement, selective breeding of new varieties, karyotype, superovulation, in vitro fertilization (IVF), Ovum Pick-up (OPU), Introcytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), estrous synchronization, embryo transfer (ET), feed and nutrition, milk and meat product processing, etc. It has been awarded “Honor Prize in Scientific Research” and “Pioneer in Buffalo Research” by the International Buffalo Federation.
In recent years, taking the first step of in vitro embryo production and embryo transfer of river buffalo breed in China, the institute has established a modern biotechnological system integrated superovulation, Ovum Pick-up (OPU), in vitro embryo production (IVEP), embryo cryopreservation and embryo transfer (ET), moving towards the industrialization of the embryo production and has achieved 10 first in the world, to quicken the reproduction process of buffalo breed, expand the scale of the buffalo species and to enhance the productivity of buffalo breed.
Since 1990, leaders of the Communist Party and State, including Jiang Zhemin, Li Ruihuan, Wen Jiabao, Song Ping, Song Jian, Chen Junsheng, Yang Ruidai, Qian Weichang, Zhou Guangzhao and Li Zhaozuo etc, have visited the Buffalo Research Institute, and spoken highly of it.
